  Dr. Wilson received his MD from UC San Diego in 1984, completed his ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic (1985 to 1988), and fellowship in refractive/corneal surgery at LSU Eye Center (1988 to 1990). He was assistant-associate professor at UT Southwestern Dallas Texas (1990 to 1995). He was professor and medical director of refractive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland (1995 to 1998). He was Chair of ophthalmology at the University of Washington in Seattle (1998 to 2003).

Since 2003, he’s been professor of ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wilson's laboratory focuses on cellular and molecular interactions involved in wound healing in the cornea, especially growth factors and receptors in the cornea and fibrosis. He was funded by NIH from 1992 to 2021 and the U.S. Department of Defense from 2019 to 2025.

He received numerous awards, including ARVO Gold Fellow (2009), Lifetime Presidential Award from ISRS-AAO (2009), the Barraquer Award from ISRS-American Academy of Ophthalmology (2020/21), and the U.S. Military MRSRS Outstanding Research Accomplishment (Individual/Academia) Award (2023).
